West Baton Rouge Museum

The West Baton Rouge Museum is devoted to the way of life on a sugarcane plantation in the 1800s.  The site includes a mule-driven sugarcane grinder, three cabins from different time periods that housed slaves and employees of Allendale Plantation, a Creole cottage built in 1830, a typical Louisiana “shotgun” house built in 1938, and the late 19th century Arbroth Mercantile Plantation Store, complete with all original furnishings.  The museum features re-enactors and exhibits, some of them interactive, on the history of sugar.
