Madonna Chapel

Featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not, the Madonna Chapel is the world’s smallest church.  Anthony Gullo was the poor, local Italian sugar cane farmer who built the church.  In 1903, his eldest son became gravely ill.  He prayed to the Blessed Mother that his boy would recover.  His son did recover and the father built the chapel in tribute to the Blessed Mother.

The church is only 8 feet square.  During mass, there is only room inside for the priest and two altar boys.  Worshippers sit or stand outside during services.   A mass is celebrated at the “little church” every year on August 15th for the Assumption of the Blessed Mother.

The church is open every day to everyone.  A key is kept in a mailbox for all to use.
