Louisiana Travel | Fresh Produce Abounds at the Lafourche Central Market BY: Melissa Holman

Fresh produce and homemade creations await at the intersection of Hwy. 1 and Hwy. 90, at an open-air pavilion known as The Lafourche Central Market.

The market is truly a go-to destination for fresh produce and those unique gifts for loved ones and friends. Leafy greens spill out of open bags, and locally grown veggies like sweet potatoes, eggplant, green beans, and tomatoes fill plastic baskets on multiple tables, all available for sale and ready to be cooked into tasty meals at home.

Sweet treats are also a staple at the market. One table at the entrance to the pavilion is covered with decadent homemade desserts like small pies made for two and personal sized pies individually wrapped and ready to eat while walking the grounds. As you make your way through the tables and vending areas, the sweet smell of kettle corn also fills the air and is accompanied by a long line of patrons, eager to get their own bag of the tasty treat.

Other items unique to the area, ranging from paintings of bayou scenes to handcrafted wooden paddles, are also for sale. These craftsmen and artists gather each Saturday morning and show off their latest creations, providing visitors with unique gifts for family and friends.

A large wooden stage sits at the rear of the pavilion and typically features a Cajun band entertaining the patrons. Families can be found gathering near the stage to enjoy the sound of the washboards and guitars, and couples often dance to the music so unique to the area.

During the holiday season, Santa makes an appearance at the market. Kris Kringle sits in his red, shiny sleigh beneath his own personal wooden shelter off to one side of the pavilion. He greets the visitors and takes pictures with the kids.

The market is much more than just a local shopping location for those who live nearby. People can be seen gathering near the walkway leading to the pavilion, chatting about their kid’s soccer game, and those in line near the kettle corn chatter about the shopping with those around them. If you’re not a local, rest assured that you will get a friendly smile and a hello as you walk up the path leading to the market. If you’re looking for a cozy gathering place with great eats and good shopping, this is the place to go.

What Cajun Daughters love about The Lafourche Central Market: The welcoming atmosphere and pumpkin pie. The market is very inviting and the pumpkin pie sold at the table near the entrance to the pavilion is a don’t-miss dessert during the holiday season.
