Louisiana Travel : Bayou Teche Black Bear and Birding Festival

Bayou Teche Black Bear and Birding Festival
Franklin, Louisiana

Though this festival features all the activities associated with a typical Louisiana festival – great music, good Louisiana food and arts & crafts booths – the Bayou Teche Black Bear & Birding Festival is so much more.   Started 8 years ago to bring awareness to the plight of the endangered black bear, this festival takes advantage of nearby beautiful Bayou Teche and the Atchafalaya Basin.  Hike or take a boat trip or canoe through the Bayou Teche National Wildlife Refuge.

Birding has been incorporated into this year’s festival.  You can bird watch on the St. Mary Loop which is part of  America’s Wetland Birding Trail.  You’ll learn about the black  bear conservation efforts at educational seminars held at the Teche Theatre.

There’s plenty of activities for everyone.  A Teen Zone has laser tag with bunkers, giant hamster balls and Booger Wars.  At the Cub Club Arena, younger kids have their own festival with storytelling, puppet and magic shows, music, games and more.  If your teddy bear or other stuffed animal has a booboo, bring him to the Teddy Bear and Friends Repair Clinic where Dr. Tesi and her surgical staff will make him all better for free.

Check festival website for a listing of all festival activities and times.
