Turtle Cake

INGREDIENTS:

 
Cake:

1 box German chocolate cake mix
1 cup water
1/2 cup oil
1 stick butter, cut in small pieces
3 eggs
1 can condensed milk, divided
1 14-oz. package caramels
1 cup pecans, coarsely chopped

Icing:

1 lb. powdered sugar, approximately
1 stick butter
3 tablespoons cocoa
5 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla

DIRECTIONS:

Cake:  Combine cake mix, water, oil, butter, eggs, and 1/2 can condensed milk (about 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons).  Beat about 2 minutes on medium speed of mixer.  

Pour half of batter into a 8x12-inch baking pan which has been greased and floured.  Bake in 325 degree oven for 15 minutes.

Melt caramels with remaining condensed milk.  Add pecans.  Pour over partially-baked cake.

Top with remaining cake batter.  Bake for an additional 35 to 40 minutes.

Allow to cool for 15 minutes, then frost with icing.

Icing:  Melt butter, stirring in cocoa and milk.  Add sifted powdered sugar until desired consistency is reached.  Stir in vanilla.

Frost cake with icing.
