Molasses Doughnuts


1 egg
½ cup sugar
1 cup molasses
½ cup buttermilk
2 tablespoons melted butter
5 cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon salt
¾ teaspoon baking soda
5 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon ginger
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
Oil for frying


Beat egg and add sugar gradually, beating well after each addition. Add molasses, buttermilk and butter.

Sift together flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder, ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Add sifted dry ingredients to batter. Mix well.

Roll out a small amount of dough at a time to ¼-inch thickness on floured board. Cut with 3-inch doughnut cutter.

Fry in deep fat at 370 degrees until golden brown, turning only once.
