Applesauce Cake



1 cup butter
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 – 16 oz. can applesauce
2 ½ cups sifted flour
1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon nutmeg
¼ teaspoon ground allspice



1 – 13 oz. can evaporated milk
2 cups sugar
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup cornstarch
½ cup water



Cream butter. Gradually add sugar. Cream until light. Add eggs, beating well after each addition. Add applesauce. Beat.

Sift remaining cake ingredients together. Add slowly to applesauce mixture. Beat until completely mixed.

Bake in three 9-inch greased cake pans at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes. Cool completely.

Mix milk, sugar and salt in saucepan. Dissolve cornstarch in water. Add to mixture. Cook over low to medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens and clears.

Frost top of layers only.
