My mother, Dorothy Arcement, who preferred to be called Dot, was the best cook I know. I can remember helping her mix cake batter in the old chipped stoneware bowl that I still use.
I have all her old cookbooks and recipe box filled with old recipes clipped from magazines or newspapers, tattered from use and age, neatly typed recipe cards yellow with age, some recipes neatly handwritten on a page from a school notebook, or scribbled on the back of a shopping list.
